Windows 10 operating system supports fingerprint unlock feature using Windows Hello in addition to face and iris unlock. Microsoft has confirmed at the WinHEC conference earlier this week that it plans to support fingerprint scanners for Windows 10 Mobile as well later this year. The new feature will roll out in the Windows 10 Mobile Anniversary Update later this summer.
Microsoft says that it will use universal driver platform and driver built for x86 desktop can be recompiled to work on ARM. The process of creating driver is same for all SKUs, but there are challenges. Microsoft says that that some Windows phone OEMs have already used fingerprint scanners from FPC and Synaptics, other fingerprint scanners might require more work to integrate into the Windows Hello functionality.
HP Elite X3 is the first Windows 10 mobile device to support the fingerprint sensor. Hope other Windows 10 smartphone makers would use fingerprint scanners on their smartphones.
