YouTube is working on a standalone virtual reality app for its recently announced virtual reality platform Daydream. The app comes with similar features like voice search, discovery, playlists and more.
Once the app is ready it will be tweaked to work better inside of a VR headset. YouTube already has limited support for VR videos, the new YouTube VR app will also offer an immersive interface for searching and browsing. The company is collaborating with the NBA, BuzzFeed, and Tastemade to deliver all new experiences to VR users. The YouTube VR app will be play 16×9 videos along with 360-degree footage.
YouTube said in a blog post,
We’re creating the YouTube VR app to provide an easier, more immersive way to find and experience virtual reality content on YouTube. It also comes with all the YouTube features you already love, like voice search, discovery, and playlists, all personalized for you, so you can experience the world’s largest collection of VR videos in a whole new way.
