Samsung to invest $1.2 billion in IoT R&D

Samsung has announced that it will invest $1.2 billion into the United States specifically around the Internet of Things market. The company’s Vice chairman and CEO Dr. Oh-Hyun Kwon announced the four-year R&D plan during an event.

This will be led by the Samsung Strategy and Innovation Center, Global Innovation Center and Samsung Research America, part of Samsung’s U.S. footprint of more than 15,000 employees across the country.

Oh-Hyun Kwon, Vice chairman and CEO, Samsung Electronics said,

If we want innovators everywhere to make use of IoT, we must make sure all tools are open to them. This means technologies that connect to each other, because we know that boundaries around technologies hold back innovation and scale.

Samsung is also co-founding a “National IoT Strategy Dialogue” with an aim to shape US policies on always-online devices.  The company said that the research is aimed to improve applications for connected everyday objects for health, public safety and energy efficiency.
