Weekly Roundup: Honor 8, Holly 3, Waterproof solar power bank, Intel’s first commercial drone and more

Huawei’s Honor brand this week launched three new Honor smartphones – the Honor 8, Honor 8 Smart, and Honor Holly 3 – in India.

The flagship Honor 8 was first announced in China back in July. It packs a 5.2-inch 1080p 2.5D curved glass display, is powered by an Octa-Core Kirin 950 processor with 4GB of RAM and runs on Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) with EMUI 4.1. It has dual 12-megapixel rear cameras, one with monochrome and other with color sensor to capture crisper, more detailed photos.

The Honor 8 comes in Sunrise Gold, Pearl White, Sapphire Blue colors and is priced at Rs. 29,999 in India. It will be available for Amazon.in, Flipkart and the Honor store online and will also be available through offline retailers.

The Honor 8 Smart is a cheaper version of the Honor 8 at the launch event. It has a 5.2-inch 1080p display with 76.4% screen-to-body ratio, is powered by an Octa-Core Kirin 650 processor and runs on Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) with EMUI 4.1 on top. It has a single 13-megapixel rear camera instead of a dual camera setup on Honor 8.

The Honor 8 Smart comes in Black, White and Gold colors, is priced at Rs. 19,999 and will go on sale soon.

The Honor Holly 3 shares similar specifications as the Honor 8 Smart. This is also the first Huawei phone that is made in India under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. It has classic 3D textured back cover, similar to the Holly 2 Plus. It is the same Honor 5A that was launched in China back in June. 

The Honor Holly 3 Plus comes in Black, White and Gold colors, is priced at Rs. 9,999 and will go on sale in India soon.

UIMI Technologies launched its first solar power bank under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. The 6000mAh power bank can also be charged using power, is dust and waterproof and has rubber finish for better durability

It comes with a single input port and dual output USB ports for charging 2 devices simultaneously. It has 2.4W LED panel light. It also has indicative lights to display charging and power consumption status. The UIMI U3 6000mAh power bank comes in Deep Sky Blue and Lime Green colors and is priced at Rs. 799. It is available from Amazon.in, Snapdeal and other e-commerce retailers.

Intex this week launched three new smartphones – two budget 4G VoLTE smartphones Aqua 5.5 VR and Aqua Craze II, and a 3G dual-SIM Aqua S2 with a fingerprint sensor.

The Aqua 5.5 VR and Aqua Craze II pack a 5.5-inch display, run Android 6.0 (Marshmallow), feature a 5-megapixel front and rear cameras. The Intex Aqua 5.5 VR comes pre-loaded with 3D content and also comes with LED flash on the front.

The Intex Aqua S2 is the cheapest Android smartphone with a fingerprint sensor in India. It has a 5-inch FWVA display with 64.4% screen-to-body ratio, is powered by a quad-core Spreadtrum SC7731 processor, runs on Android 6.0 (Marshmallow), has a 5-megapixel front and rear cameras.

It has 3G connectivity and comes with dual SIM support. The Intex Aqua S2 comes in Champagne, White and Grey colors and is priced at Rs. 4,990.

The Intex Aqua 5.5 VR comes in Champagne and Blue colors and Aqua Craze II comes in Dark Blue, Grey and Champagne colors and are priced at Rs. 5,099 and Rs. 5,990, respectively.

Xiaomi finally launched its 10000mAh Mi Powerbank Pro with two-way fast charging and USB-Type C port in India. It was earlier introduced in China.

It has USB Type-C support and support fast charging (5V/2A 9V/2A 12V/1.5A) so that it takes only 3.5 hours to charge the power bank fully with 18W charger.

The Xiaomi 10000 mAh Mi Powerbank Pro is priced at Rs. 1,999 and will go on sale in India from October 17th during Xiaomi’s Diwali sale.

Sony launched BRAVIA KD-65Z9D, its new 4K TV in the BRAVIA Z9D series with 4K HDR support. It features a newly developed 4K image processor – the 4K HDR Processor X1 Extreme and a unique backlight technology- Backlight Master Drive, to attain extraordinary contrast and extremely accurate wide colour expression.

It runs on the latest Android TV 6.0 (Marshmallow) with Sony’s exclusive user interface, has inbuilt Program guide & one TV Remote controlling both DTH/STB and BRAVIA. The Sony BRAVIA KD-65Z9D is priced at Rs. 5,04,900 and will be available for pre-booking from 15th October till 31st October in all Sony Centers.

Asus launched Zenfone 3 Laser, successor of last year’s Zenfone Laser in India back in August, and it started selling the smartphone this week.

The Zenfone 3 Laser packs a 5.5-inch 1080p display with 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection and 77% screen-to-body ratio, is powered by Snapdragon 430 SoC, runs on Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) with ZenUI, has a 13-megapixel rear camera.

The Asus Zenfone 3 Laser comes in Glacier Silver and Sand Gold colors and is priced at Rs. 18,999.

Intel unveiled its first commercial drone dubbed as Falcon 8+ this week. It is especially designed for industrial inspection surveying and mapping. 

 

The drone comes equipped with Intel Falcon 8+ UAV, Intel Cockpit for ground control as well as the Intel Powerpack to power the UAV. It is also powered with the triple-redundant AscTec Trinity autopilot. It can fly for up to 26 minutes at a time on a redundant power pack.

The UAV is arrange in a V-form measuring 768 x 817 x 160 mm with a take off weight of 2.8 kg (6 pounds) when loaded with a camera. There is no word on the pricing or launch.

Ulefone introduced U007 Pro, an updgraded version of the U007 . This has 4G support and the MediaTek MT6580A SoC has been replaced by MT6735 SoC. Other specifications are the same, including a 5-inch HD display,  Android 6.0 (Marshmallow), 8-megapixel rear camera with LED flash and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera and dual-SIM support.

The Ulefone U007 Pro comes in Space Grey, Black and White colors and is priced at US$ 69.99 (Rs. 4680 approx.). It is now available for pre-order online and will ship soon.

MediaTek India announced availability of MT2511 and MT2523, its latest System on Chips (SoCs) targeted at health, fitness and wearables devices. The MT2511 is the company’s first bio-sensing analog front-end (AFE) chip designed for health and fitness devices, and the MT2523 is designed for active and fitness smartwatches and offers GPS, dual-mode Bluetooth Low Energy, and a MIPI-supported high-resolution mobile screen.

The health devices powered by MT2511 and MT2523 are expected to be introduced in the India market by early 2017.

Lastly, a division of Kingston Technology – HyperX – launched its second official Xbox licensed gaming headset, CloudX Revolver Gears of War in India. The headset is co-designed with Microsoft and The Coalition, the studio developing Gears of War 4.

It features a genuine leather headband and high-quality memory foam that lets you play for hours. It has solid steel frame built for long-lasting durability, and the detachable noise-cancellation microphone. The HyperX Cloud Revolver Gears of War is priced at Rs. 11,999, but it is available exclusively from Amazon.in for Rs. 9,698. It is backed by a two-year warranty.
