The Unicode Consortium has today proposed a shortlist of 51 emojis for acceptance in Unicode 10. New emojis include a giraffe, dinosaur, T-Rex , vampire, zombies, bearded man, soda/milkshake, breastfeeding, a “shhh” face, pie, starry-eyed face, woman in hijab and zebra.
Along with emojis and hand gestures, number of food items such as e broccoli, pretzel, coconut, and sandwich are also added to the list. Activities such as rock climbing, sauna, yoga/meditation are on this list, as well as clothing such as socks, gloves, and a coat. The list does not include almond, leafy greens, face with lightbulb and face banging against wall.
The Emoji subcommittee (ESC) has received a number of proposals for Emoji faces. A grinning smiley face with star eyes, face with open mouth vomiting, face with finger covering closed lips, smiling face with smiling eyes and hand covering mouth and shocked face with an exploding head are also among expressions being considered this year.
The consortium decides which characters and emojis appear in keyboards. Unicode is used by companies like Apple, Google, Oracle, and IBM as a character encoding standard. The emoji list for 2017 will be finalized when Unicode 10.0 is released in mid-2017.
