Facebook came under the scanner after it was accused of influencing the masses with fake news on its site that resulted into an unexpected result for the recent US presidential election. In order to put an end to such fake news sites, Google and Facebook have announced measures to curb spreading of fake news.
Google said it will update its policies and ban such fake news sites from using its AdSense program. In a statement, Google promised to “restrict ad serving on pages that misrepresent, misstate, or conceal information about the publisher, the publisher’s content, or the primary purpose of the web property. Currently, Google bans its AdSense program from being used by sites that promote violent videos and imagery, pornography, and hate speech.
“Moving forward, we will restrict ad serving on pages that misrepresent, misstate, or conceal information about the publisher, the publisher’s content, or the primary purpose of the web property,” Google said in a statement, added Reuters.
Mark Zuckerberg, Following CEO has rubbished all the accusations about fake news on Facecbook and stating that “more than 99 percent of what people see is authentic.” However, the social network is following Google’s footsteps and has also updated its advertising policies saying that its ban on deceptive and misleading content applies to fake news.
“We do not integrate or display ads in apps or sites containing content that is illegal, misleading or deceptive, which includes fake news,” Facebook said in a statement, added the report.
