Apple kills AirPort wireless routers development division

The Cupertino giant, Apple has dissolved its wireless routers division in an attempt to focus more on the products that generate major revenue. According to a new report from Bloomberg, the engineers in the wireless router team has been dispersed to other departments including Apple TV.

While, Apple currently sells three wireless routers — the AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme, and AirPort Time capsule at $99 (approx Rs. 6,745), $199 (approx Rs. 13,558) and $299 (approx. Rs. 20,400) respectively, none of the device have seen a refresh since 2013.

Wireless router comes under Apple’s “other category” along with Apple Watch and Apple TV that accounts for about 5 percent of total sales.
For its routers, the company focused more integrating control of its devices into its computer operating system and industrial design.

Google recently introduced its first WiFi home router for $129. It is a bit sad that Apple isn’t ready to try something new with its WiFi routers. Back in June Apple officially discontinued Thunderbolt Display that it had been selling since 2011.
