It looks like WhatsApp is adding new feature that improves location sharing. According to WABetaInfo WhatsApp will soon add the ability for users to share live location during a group chat. The feature is currently being tested on WhatsApp beta for Android and iOS.
Currently, users can send location to individual as well as group chats however that only gives your location at the time you send that message. The new feature was spotted on the beta builds of iOS (v 2.17.3.28) and Android (v 2.16.399); and is disabled by default. In order to activate the feature you will have to head to the group Settings option on the top right where you will see ‘Show my friends’ that can be turned on and off according to your preference. WhatsApp users can also select the time duration of their live location. The options as seen in the images include 1 minute, 2 minutes, 5 minutes and indefinitely.
