Samsung Galaxy Note7 will be recycled and sold as refurbished or rental phones

After reports, Samsung has confirmed that it will sell returned Galaxy Note7 devices outside US as refurbished phones or rental phones where applicable. It also said that remaining devices will be recycled, and salvageable components will be detached for reuse.

Samsung said that selling refurbished phones or rental phones depends consultations with regulatory authorities and carriers as well as due consideration of local demand.

It will use components such as semiconductors and camera modules that will be detached by companies specializing in such services and used for test sample production purposes. From the leftover components, Samsung will extract precious metals, such as copper, nickel, gold and silver by utilizing eco-friendly companies specializing in such processes.

Samsung said that it also plans to join the EU’s R&D and test efforts to develop new eco-friendly processing methods, as part of its ongoing commitment to recycling.

Samsung said that release markets and release dates of refurbished Galaxy Note7 will be announced soon.

In a statement to The Verge, Samsung hinted that the phone may be renamed entirely when more details are unveiled.

The objective of introducing refurbished devices is solely to reduce and minimize any environmental impact. The product details including the name, technical specification and price range will be announced when the device is available. Samsung will not be offering refurbished Galaxy Note 7 devices for rent or sale in the US.
