Facebook Spaces Social VR platform launched

Facebook has launched a new social VR app dubbed as Spaces at the on going F8 conference. The platform will let you create a cartoon-like avatar that you use as your virtual self.

Facebook Spaces comes three years after it acquired Oculus. To get started, you will have to choose one of your Facebook photos and select from array of options for your VR appearance and then customize your look i.e eye color, hairstyle, facial features and more. Once you’ve decided on your look, jump into the experience and invite your Facebook friends to join you. You can draw in the air with a virtual marker to create anything. Facebook content including 360 videos and photos can  be seen using VR as you and your friends can relive personal memories from your own Timelines, or even make new ones as you explore things that interest you from people and Pages you follow.

Moreover, Facebook Spaces is integrated with Facebook Messenger calls thereby allowing you to be in VR and broadcast the experience to a friend who is not in VR. The friend will see a 2D version of what is going on in the VR space. You can take VR selfies, draw, watch 360 videos with friends, and make calls via Messenger.

Facebook users with the Oculus system can connect their Facebook accounts and communicate via VR, using voice chat and avatar body language. Facebook Spaces VR platform is available in beta for Oculus Rift and Touch and can be downloaded from the Oculus Store.
