WhatsApp back online after worldwide outage of about 2 hours

Facebook-owned WhatsApp went down for a few hours before it came back online. First it went down only in select regions, soon it was down in several countries globally. Earlier Whatsapp System Status in the app showed that the service was operating normally even though it was down, the company later confirmed that the service is experience problem, and they are working on bringing it back online shortly.

According to DownDetector that offers a realtime overview of status information and outages of services, the outage that started at 4:10 PM EDT (1:40 AM IST) lasted for about 2 and half hours in most parts of the world. 40% reported connection issues, 36% reported issues in sending or receiving messages and 23% reported log-in issues.

Regarding the outage, in a statement, WhatsApp said:

Earlier today, WhatsApp users in all parts of the world were unable to access WhatsApp for a few hours. We have now fixed the issue and apologize for the inconvenience
