Earlier in January this year US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) filed a lawsuit against Qualcomm for anti-competitive practices. Now, Intel and Samsung have filed amicus briefs with the court supporting the FTC’s lawsuit and opposing Qualcomm’s request to dismiss the case. Both the companies claim that Qualcomm uses its dominant position in the mobile processor industry to keep other players out.
Intel said in a blog post,
Intel is ready, willing, and able to compete on the merits in this market that Qualcomm has dominated for years. But Qualcomm has maintained an interlocking web of abusive patent and commercial practices that subverts competition on the merits. These practices have illegally coerced mobile phone manufacturers into purchasing the chipsets they need from Qualcomm and Qualcomm alone.
Meanwhile, Samsung claims its in-house chip unit is artificially held back by Qualcomm’s unwillingness to license its technology, added the report. The FTC trial is scheduled to begin on June 15th.
