Google has unveiled a indoor positioning tech dubbed as Visual Positioning Service (VPS) at its Google I/O developers conference. It is basically GPS for indoors that helps devices quickly and accurately understand their location. VPS can direct you right to the item you are looking for once inside.
Google says VPS makes use of machine learning, computer vision and mapping coordinates to direct you to your location. It will look for distinct visual features in your environment to create a map of the location using only the camera on your phone. The company says combine precise location enabled by VPS with audio interfaces could help visually-impaired people navigate through the world. VPS works today in partner museums.
Google had released a dev kit for Tango in 2015 while the first consumer device made by Lenovo was launched last year. VPS will appear in the next Tango device, the ASUS ZenFone AR that will be available later this summer.
