Last week, Apple started assembling iPhones in India at its Wistron facility in Bengaluru as per WSJ report. The company now wants to expand its contract manufacturer’s facility in Bengaluru, according to Union minister of Electronics and IT Ravi Shankar Prasad.
The minister said government officials were in touch with Apple and other mobile phone manufacturers for expanding facilities and setting up new plants. Meanwhile, Apple is still in talks with the government over its demands for duty exemptions and other concession.
Earlier in March, Karnataka IT Minister Priyank Kharge confirmed that Apple will start making iPhones in the country from April. It was stated that the company will assemble 3 to 4 lakh iPhone SE handsets India. In Q2 2017, Apple reported that it had set a new March quarter record for India, where revenue grew by strong double digits.
