Samsung patent shows new foldable smartphone concept

Foldable phone looks to be the next big thing that is going to flood the market very soon, and Samsung is expected to be the first major vendor to launch a foldable smartphone as early as 2018. Though Samsung has filed numerous patents for foldable phones in the past, new sketches of the Samsung phone that is foldable have surfaced online.

These sketches are the patent drawings that are filed by the Samsung electronics to the Korean Intellectual Property earlier this week and is spotted by LetsGoDigital. The title of the patent filing roughly translates to “flexible electronic device.” The sketches provide us with a look at the foldable clamshell design that comes with a bulky hinge leaving a radius for the display to bend without snapping or creasing.

LetsGoDigital says that the device has two displays, one of which is flexible can be folded from one side, and the other screen is on the outside and might be visible when it’s folded something like the Flip-phone. The hinge from the sketches looks very similar to the Surface Book, and the screen that is flexible will work even by folding down in the middle.

Going by the drawings and designs, the device looks to be bulky when it’s folded, so placing it in pockets might be a problem. Having said that, it’s still great to see Samsung coming out with a working model of a foldable phone shortly.
