The phone packs a 5.5-inch HD 2.5D curved glass display with Corning Gorilla Glass protection. The curved glass screen give the phone a premium look, but there is a black border round the screen, which looks a bit weird. The phone is powered by Snapdragon 435 Mobile Platform, similar to the Redmi 4. It runs on Android 7.1.2 (Nougat) with MIUI 8. Our unit had MIUI 9 Beta ROM. Xiaomi has promised stable MIUI 9 ROM mid-November.

The main highlight of the smartphone is its 16-megapixel front-facing camera with f/2.0 aperture and 76.4-degree wide-angle lens. There is also LED flash that promises effects of natural lighting for sharper and more
vibrant self-portraits. It also comes with a Beautify 3.0 feature to enhance the selfies without losing original facial details, according to the company. Selfie shots came out well. We will be testing out the selfie camera in the review soon. The phone also has notification LED.

Unlike previous smartphones that had Hybrid dual SIM slots, Xiaomi has finally switched to dedicated SIM and microSD slots. This is definitely a welcome move. There is a 13-megapixel camera on the back with LED Flash and f/2.2 aperture. You can also see the fingerprint sensor on the back. Xiaomi doesn’t miss out the infrared sensor on the top.

The back has a metallic finish and the phone has a aluminium alloy frame that will reduce the heat. It has a 3080mAh built-in battery, which is not huge when compared to the 4100mAh battery on the Redmi 4.

The Redmi Y1 also comes in Dark Gray color. It is priced at Rs. 8,999 for the 3GB RAM with 32GB storage version and the 4GB RAM with 64GB storage version is priced at Rs. 10,999. It will be available exclusively on Amazon.in, Mi.com, Mi Home and offline stores starting from November 8th.
