Sony confirms Android 9.0 Pie update for range of Xperia smartphones [Update: Roll out dates detailed]

Update – October 19: After the Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact got the Android 9.0 (Pie) update  last week, earlier than the promised November release. Sony has now announced new dates for the roll out for other devices.

  • XZ Premium, XZ1 and XZ1 Compact – from 26 October, 2018
  • XZ2 Premium – from 7 November, 2018
  • XA2, XA2 Ultra and XA2 Plus – from 4 March, 2019

Earlier: After a report, Sony Mobile has officially confirmed the list of its smartphones that will get Android 9.0 (Pie) update. This includes its flagship smartphones, but the first-generation Xperia X and XZ series are being left out with an exception to the XZ Premium. Likewise, the XA1 series that were launched last year are left out, and only the XA2 series that were launched this year are getting updated to Android Pie.

List of Sony Xperia smartphones that are confirmed to receive the Android 9.0 (Pie) update:

  • Xperia XZ2
  • Xperia XZ2 Compact
  • Xperia XZ2 Premium
  • Xperia XZ1
  • Xperia XZ1 Compact
  • Xperia XZ Premium
  • Xperia XA2
  • Xperia XA2 Ultra
  • Xperia XA2 Plus

Sony said that its Premium-range models are expected to get the upgrade available from November (Even though earlier rumor said that it is expected in September) and XA2 series is expected to get the update in early 2019.

Android Pie update comes with lots of new features and improvements including navigation gestures, Adaptive Battery that uses machine learning to prioritize system resources for the apps, App Actions, and more.

After Google Pixel smartphones and Essential Phone PH-1 got the Pie update, HTC and Motorola have confirmed the list of smartphones that will get the Android Pie update. OnePlus even said that its 2-year old OnePlus 3 and 3T will get the update. Check out the list of smartphones getting the Android Pie update.
