Huawei’s Mate 20, Mate 20 Pro flagships are set to launch next month i.e October, while we know the basic hardware and design of the Mate 20 Pro, most of the details are still under the wraps. However, we now have some details regarding the features of the camera app based on EMUI 9.
Thanks to the Mate 20 Pro firmware, the EMIUI 9.0 based camera app might pack features like underwater mode, AI cinema mode, AI Zoom, and Video Bokeh. Since the Mate 20 Pro is a flagship that might come with an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance, but the underwater mode makes us believe that it is designed to work with or without a waterproof phone.
It is designed to help you “take clear shots in underwater environments.” You can press the volume down button to take a photo, press the volume up button to shoot a video, press the power button to turn the camera on/off, or touch and hold the button at the bottom to exit. However, the promotional material shows a picture of the phone in a bag, meaning that Huawei wants you to put your smartphone in a bag and submerge it underwater to take photos.
It’s possible this feature won’t launch alongside Huawei Mate 20, Huawei might flip the switch at a later date. The AI Cinema mode, thanks to Kirin 980’s ability of real-time object recognition in videos, dual NPUs will apply certain filters in real-time during video recording. The available filters are AI Color, Background Blur, Fresh, Vintage, and Suspense.
The AI Zoom feature will automatically adjust the zoom level to keep your subject centered. Digging into the code, there are three requirements for the feature to be enabled; the video recording resolution must be at least 1080p, AI Cinema must be enabled, and the beauty level must be off. It also shows that “subject” must be a person’s face judging by the reference to Smart Zoom (AI Zoom) in the FaceDetectionExtension class.
Finally, it is video bokeh, Huawei will be offering multiple video bokeh effects will and it requires support in the camera HAL. For now, that’s all the information we have on the EMUI 9.0 based camera app on Mate 20 Pro and Mate 20.
