Nokia Make A Touchscreen Using Ice

A Nokia team from Finland have managed to create a touchscreen out of solidified water/ice! You read it right out of water.

What the team did basically was take blocks of ice, stack them up use heat guns to join them together and then using infrared, optics and some electronics to create the World’s first touchscreen made from water/ice.

“This was a playful experiment, but one that we think showed interactive computing interfaces can now be built anywhere,” says Jyri Huopaniemi at Nokia’s research lab in Tampere, whose team built the touchscreen, dubbed Ubice, or ubiquitous ice.

The team got inspiration from Finland’s tradition of making sculptures out of ice and they decided to try and see if it was possible to make an interactive ice sculpture.
