Nokia 4.2 Unboxing and First Impressions

HMD Global has finally launched the Nokia 4.2 in India today after it was introduced at the MWC in February. We already brought you the hands-on and photo gallery from the MWC, here we have the first impressions.

Box Contents

  • Nokia 4.2 smartphone in Black color
  • 2-pin charger (5V-1A)
  • Micro USB Cable
  • Earphones
  • SIM Ejector tool
  • User manual and warranty information

The Nokia 4.2 comes with a 5.71-inch (720 x 1520 pixels) HD+ a-Si TFT LCD screen with 19:9 aspect ratio, about 77% screen-to-body ratio and has a waterdrop notch, smaller that the one of the Nokia 5.1 Plus. The screen is bright and the sunlight legibility is good as well. The notch houses an 8-megapixel camera with f/2.0 aperture and 1.12µm pixel size that can also be used for face unlock.

It is powered by Snapdragon 439 Mobile Platform with Adreno 505 GPU. This uses eight Cortex A53 cores with four performance cores clocked at 1.95GHz and other four efficiency cores clocked at 1.45GHz. The performance is better than the Snapdragon 430 and the 435. Since it uses 12nm fabrication technology, it is more power efficient than 28nm Snapdragon 430 and 435 SoCs. However, the Snapdragon 632 offers better performance since it has four Cortex-A73-based Kryo 250 cores in addition to Cortex-A53-based Kryo 250 effeciency cores.

Similar to most other Nokia phones, this is an Android One smartphone, and it runs Android 9.0 (Pie) out of the box. The company already promised 3 years of security updates and 2 years of platform updates.

Another thing that stands out is its build quality. The phone feels solid and premium when holding it. Even though the phone has a plastic frame, it doesn’t slip out of your hands. It has a glass back, but it attracts fingerprints easily. It measures 148.95 x 71.30 x 8.39 mm and weighs 161 grams.

It has a notification light around the power button on the right, which is unique. This also lights up when the phone is charging. It is also the one of the first Nokia phones to come with a dedicated Google Assistant button that is present on the left side.

On the back there is a 13-megapixel primary camera with LED flash, PDAF f/2.2 aperture, 1.12µm pixel size along with a secondary 2-megapixel camera for portrait shots. There is a fingerprint sensor on the back. The phone comes with dedicated dual SIM and a microSD slot arranged in a single tray. The phone packs a 3000mAh built-in battery, but it doesn’t have support for fast charging and uses micro USB.

Priced at the Rs. 10,990, the company is offering Rs. 500 discount on online purchase, 10% cashback for HDFC users, six-month screen replacement worth Rs. 3,500 and more.
