Airtel begins building partnerships for 5G use cases; in talks with other companies for private LTE networks

At India Mobile Congress (IMC) last year and this year, Airtel showcased 5G use cases, futuristic digital technologies, and more. While some countries have started deploying commercial 5G networks, Indian telecom operators are yet to get the spectrum allocated. But in the meantime, Airtel has now said that they have started building partnerships and alliances for right 5G use cases and is also in talks for private LTE networks.

The use cases of 5G are mostly focused on enterprises and currently, Airtel is making sure they start building partnerships and alliances for right 5G use cases. Airtel is also in talks with some companies for private LTE networks and is exploring the use cases as a telecom operator.

Airtel said that its private LTE offering aims to enable smart factory and industry 4.0 use cases. It is starting its focus on use cases in smart factories, in the field of mining, automation, and more. The company has now created a verticalization of its business and has deeper knowledge, and with that deeper knowledge along with partnerships, it is doing trials to solve some of the problems.

The rollout of 5G in India is still some time away, but it will be interesting to see what the telecom operators here will come up with 5G technology.

Ajay Chitkara, Director and CEO, Airtel Business said:

For 5G, almost all use cases are focussed towards enterprises. 5G ecosystem is currently being built and the whole devices cost need to come…what we are doing is making sure that at least we start building partnerships and alliances for right use cases.

Private LTE network is not just a connectivity story. There is a story of a use case so what we are attempting now as a telco to explore use cases… as telcos, we are looking at solving a specific problem…instead of saying we have a network versus we are now saying buy our network.
