Intel announces Atom P5900 platform for 5G wireless base stations and more

Intel has launched a bunch of new products aimed at the deployment of 5G network infrastructure along with an update to its scalable data centre focussed processors. These include their new Atom P5900 processors, Ethernet 700 Series Network Adapter and Diamond Mesa ASIC for 5G network acceleration.

The Atom P5900 SoC is based on Intel’s 10nm SoC architecture and is designed to enable critical 5G requirements like high bandwidth and low latency processing in 5G wireless basestations. Intel is investing heavily into this market, expecting nearly 6 million 5G base stations running their platform by 2024.

The second product that Intel announced in its 5G portfolio is the Ethernet 700 series Network Adaptor. It is a 5G optimised Ethernet NIC with Hardware-Enhanced Precision Time Protocol capabilities that ensures accurate time synchronisation, especially in edge servers. The product will enter production in Q2 2020 and is currently undergoing the sampling process.

Expanding their data-centre product lineup, Intel has announced their 2nd Generation Xeon Scalable processors. It comes in 3 flavours labeled with a “R,” “T,” or “U” suffix, that are designed for dual-and single-socket mainstream and entry-level server systems respectively. The 2nd gen processors offer improved Turbo Boost Tech capabilities and higher cache performance. Offering the industries highest server processor frequency, Intel also introduced two new processors, the Xeon Gold 6256 and 6250 with an impressive base clock of 3.9 GHz and turbo up to 4.5 GHz.

Commenting on the announcement, Navin Shenoy, executive vice president and general manager, Data Platforms Group at Intel said:

As the industry makes the transition to 5G, we continue to see network infrastructure as the most significant opportunity representing a $25 billion silicon opportunity by 2023. By offering customers the fastest and most effective path to design, deliver and deploy 5G solutions, across core, edge and access, we are poised to expand our leading silicon position in this growing market.
