“Touchless” cash withdrawals using smartphone being tested at ATMs across India

Withdrawing cash from ATMs can be very risky during the COVID-19 pandemic, since it requires you to touch buttons on a machine that could have previously come in-contact with an infected person.  A solution to it is to have contact-less ATM withdrawals, and AGS Transact Technologies Limited (AGSTTL) is currently testing such a technology for ATMs across India.

AGSTTL is currently providing a demo of the technology to interested banks. The solution does not require banks to replace their ATM machines, instead it can be implemented via a software update. It uses a QR code scanner from the banks mobile application to begin the authentication process. The rest of the process would work via the mobile app and the customer can collect the cash instantly.

The way it works is:

  • Open the Bank mobile application on your smartphone and select QR Cash Withdrawal.
  • Enter the amount you wish to withdraw on the mobile app
  • Scan the QR code on the ATM screen
  • Confirm the amount by clicking on ‘proceed’ in the app
  • Enter the mPin no. to authenticate the transaction
  • Collect the Cash & Receipt

Commenting on the technology, Ravi B. Goyal, Chairman and MD, AGS Transact Technologies Limited said:

In the wake of the global pandemic, we have been working towards providing customers with a more streamlined and simplified user experience. India continues to have a strong base for cash transactions while QR code & BHIM UPI remain a popular choice for making digital payments. Our new Touchless ATM solution is an extension of the flagship QR Cash solution which ensures safety of the users and will provide a seamless cash withdrawal experience with enhanced security. With minimum investment, the banks can enable this solution for their ATM networks by upgrading the existing software. We are confident that this solution will resonate with Banks & customers alike
