Back in January 2020, Unicode released their Emoji 13.0, a list of newly approved emoji for companies and platforms to introduce into their own apps and operating systems. Developers usually modify these emoji for their own platforms and now Apple has announced they’ll be adding 16 new emoji with iOS 14 later this year.
Apple is expected to add these emoji with the release of iOS 14.1 or 14.2, as previously they released new emoji with iOS 13.2, iOS 12.1 and iOS 11.1. The new list of emoji include:
- Dodo
- Nesting Dolls
- Piñata
- Tamale
- Pinched Fingers
- Boomerang
- Ninja
- Coin
- Anatomical Heart
- Beaver
- Transgender Symbol
- Bubble Tea
- Lungs
- Smiling Face with Tear
- Disguised Face
- People Hugging
There is no COVID-19 specific emoji this time, as it usually takes around two year for an emoji submission to get approved by Unicode and added to phones. However, Apple will be releasing new headwear and face mask customisation options for Memoji, which can used as stickers in iOS messaging
