The COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect the smartphone market as IDC has reported that the worldwide smartphone market declined by 16% YoY in Q2 2020. Total shipments were recorded at 278.4 million smartphones and the top 5 manufacturers for the quarter were HUAWEI, Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi and OPPO.
HUAWEI claimed the top spot for this quarter, helped by its massive growth of 10% YoY in its home country, China. Overall, HUAWEI recorded a decline of 5.1% YoY, shipping 55.8 million smartphones and enjoyed a market share of 20.0%. Samsung took second place with shipment numbers recorded 54.2 million smartphones. This calculates to a significant decline of 28.9% YoY.
Apple had a market share of 13.5%, shipping 37.6 million units in Q2 2020. The success of the iPhone 11 and the new iPhone SE (2020) contributed to its 11.2% YoY growth. Maintaining its fourth place is Xiaomi, shipping 28.5 million units, declining 11.8% YoY for the quarter. OPPO climbed back to 5th place with 24.0 million units shipped, recording an 18% YoY decline.
Commenting on the report, Nabila Popal, research director with IDC’s Worldwide Mobile Device Trackers, said:
Smartphones shipments suffered a huge decline in Q2 as they directly correlate to consumer spending, which had a massive reduction due to the global economic crisis and rising unemployment brought on by the widespread lockdowns. This, combined with the closure of retail stores, especially in regions where online shopping is less common, compounded the negative effect on smartphone sales. In addition, consumers spent significantly other technologies, such as PCs, monitors, and tablets, to facilitate mandatory work from home and distance learning, leaving an even smaller share in the shrinking consumer wallet for smartphones.
