Twitter acquires social podcast app Breaker to help with Spaces

Last month, Twitter began beta testing a new audio-based platform called Spaces for a limited set of users. To help with its development, Twitter has acquired Breaker, which is another podcast app that has some community and social elements.

Breaker was created back in 2016 and only recently launched iOS and Android apps in 2020. After the acquisition, Breaker will be shutting down their service on January 15th, and in a blog post, the Breaker team has detailed a way for existing users to transfer their existing podcast subscriptions to another service.

Spaces is a project started by Twitter that is aimed at building a new platform for safe conversational experiences between users and their followers. The whole team at Breaker will be moving to Twitter to help with Spaces, however it is unclear as to what aspect of Spaces will the Breaker team specifically be working on.
