Apple releases statement for iPhone 12 and MagSafe accessories potentially affecting medical devices

On Jan 4th 2021, an article from the Heart Rhythm journal revealed that Apple’s new iPhone 12 and their MagSafe certified accessories could possibly interfere with implanted medical devices. Apple has acknowledged the issue, and has released a statement, sharing information on it.

The article from Heart Rhythm journal claimed that the new magnets in the iPhone 12, which are a part of their MagSafe technology, could possibly interfere with medically implanted devices such as pacemakers. This could potentially lead to issue with these devices as they utilize sensitive sensors and electromagnets inside.

In a new document, Apple released the following statement,

Medical devices such as implanted pacemakers and defibrillators might contain sensors that respond to magnets and radios when in close contact. To avoid any potential interactions with these devices, keep your iPhone and MagSafe accessories a safe distance away from your device (more than 6 inches / 15 cm apart or more than 12 inches / 30 cm apart if wirelessly charging). But consult with your physician and your device manufacturer for specific guidelines.

They also stated,

All MagSafe accessories (each sold separately) also contain magnets—and MagSafe Charger and MagSafe Duo Charger contain radios. These magnets and electromagnetic fields might interfere with medical devices

Apple still maintains that while the iPhone 12 has more magnets than previous iPhone models, it does not pose a greater risk of magnetic interference to medical devices. For more information on Apple’s safety information for the iPhone, click here.
