Carl Pei, who co-founded OnePlus today launched ‘Nothing’, which he says is a new forward-thinking consumer technology company based in London. This comes after receiving $7 million (approx Rs. 52 crores) in a Seed funding round from a list of high-profile investors such as Tony Fadell, Casey Neistat, Kevin Lin, Steve Huffman and Josh Buckley for the new hardware venture. Last week, the company raised undisclosed funding from CRED Founder Kunal Shah.
Carl said that Nothing aims to remove barriers between people and technology to create a seamless digital future. In an interview with The Verge Carl said that the company plans to differentiate itself by using “custom-made” components in its products right from the start. He added that the company plans to make most of its money by selling hardware rather than software subscriptions, at least initially.
He also said that it is a completely independent company owned by its founding team and investors and has its R&D department. It has contract manufacturers to build its devices, but it won’t rebrand other products.
The company confirmed that the first smart devices from ‘Nothing’ will be released in the first half of this year.
Commenting on the launch, Carl Pei, CEO and founder of Nothing said:
It’s been a while since anything interesting happened in tech. It is time for a fresh breeze of change. Nothing’s mission is to remove barriers between people and technology to create a seamless digital future. We believe that the best technology is beautiful, yet natural and intuitive to use. When sufficiently advanced, it should fade into the background and feel like nothing.
