Worldwide PC and tablet shipments reach 458.2 million units in 2020, 17% YoY growth: Canalys


In a report by Canalys, worldwide PC shipments, which include tablet shipments, has reached 458.2 million units during 2020, which calculates to a growth of 17% YoY. During the 4th quarter alone, the market shipped 143.7 million units, which is a growth of 35% YoY. Leading the market is Lenovo, followed by Apple, HP, Dell, and Samsung.

Lenovo shipped a total on 87 million units during the year 2020, of which 28.8 million units were shipped in the fourth quarter alone. Apple also saw strong sales during the year, specifically in the tablet department, shipping a total 81.4 million units in 2020, of which 26.4 million units in Q4, 2020.

Apple is leading the market with their tablet shipments, and in Q4 2020, their shipments grew by 40% with 19.2 million units, which is their highest since Q4 2014. Samsung took second place with 9.2 million units shipped and Amazon came in third with 6.5 million units.

Chromebooks also saw a huge spike in demand during Q4 2020, with HP in the lead, shipping 3.5 million units, followed Lenovo who shipped 2.8 million units.

Commenting on the report, Canalys Analyst Ishan Dutt said:

The growth momentum enjoyed by tablets shows just how important easy access to computing power has become in the current time. Their versatility across, not just different form factors and price points, but also connectivity options, make them an ideal device across a variety of use-cases, from simple slates for e-learning and content consumption all the way to high-performance detachables for productivity users who are adapting to spending a larger proportion of time at home
