Indian smartphone shipments reach 150 million units in 2020, declines 1.7% YoY: IDC


The Indian smartphone market, after many years, has recorded a decline of 1.7% YoY for the year 2020, shipping a total 150 million units. During Q4, the market recorded shipment numbers of 45 million devices, growing 21% YoY, and the top 5 manufacturers were Xiaomi, Samsung, Vivo, realme and OPPO.

Xiaomi found success with the Redmi 9 series that was launched during the second half of 2020. During Q4, they shipped 12 million units, growing 12% YoY and has a market share of 27%. Samsung came in second place, shipping 7.7 million units and growing 35% YoY in Q4 2020.

In third place was Vivo, who lead the shipment numbers in the offline channel. They shipped a total of 7.7 million units in Q4 2020 and a total of 26.7 million units during the entire 2020 year. realme and OPPO came in 4th place and 5th place, shipping 5.2 and 5.1 million units respectively.

Commenting on market’s performance in 2021, Navkendar Singh, Research Director, Client Devices & IPDS, IDC India said:

In 2021, IDC expects the smartphone market to grow in high single-digit YoY, driven majorly by upgrading consumers, in the mid-range segment and affordable 5G offerings (~US$250). Also, revamped offline channel play is anticipated, to bring back growth in the very important brick and mortar counters for long term sustainability.
