Google introduces Password Checkup notification, Scheduled Messages and more for Android

Google has introduced a bunch of new features into Android that are designed to improve the everyday user experience. Google Maps is receiving a dark mode, TalkBack is improved, the Google Assistant has new capabilities, Messages can be scheduled for later and more.

Android features a built-in password manager that is receiving a new update called Password Checkup. This feature, which is currently present in Google Chrome, will check a user’s credentials against a list of known compromised passwords every time they use password autofill. If the credentials are found to be compromised, Google will prompt users to change their password.

Sending text messages in the Messages app can now be scheduled for a later time. To do so, simply type the message, hold the send button and a window will pop-up where you can select the time for when you want to send it.

Google TalkBack, their accessibility feature for visually impaired or blind users, is receiving an update with more intuitive gestures, a unified menu, a new reading control menu and more.

The Google Assistant can now work better when the device is locked, thanks to a new toggle for Lock Screen Personal Results in the Assistant’s settings. Once turned on, the Assistant can perform more functions with voice commands such as “Hey Google, set an alarm” or “Hey Google, play pop music on Spotify.”, even when the phone is locked.

Android Auto now offers the ability to setup custom wallpapers, and the launch screen has added Shortcuts, which can be set to access certain contacts or set up custom actions with the Google Assistant. There is also a fun new feature where users can play mini games like trivia and “Jeopardy!” through the Google app.

Finally, Dark mode in Google Maps is rolling out to all users globally, and it can be accessed in the app’s settings, under the “Theme” options.

Password Checkup will be arriving to all Android phones running Android 9.0 and above. Scheduled Messages will be arriving to phones running Android 7.0 and newer, and the Android Auto features will be coming to Android 6.0 smartphones and above.
