Google is testing a new way to follow content from websites by using the open RSS web standard, with a feature called Follow. The feature is experimental and is currently being tested on some Chrome Canary builds for Android users in the US.
At the moment there are multiple ways to keep up with new content posted on a website, such as subscribing to mailing lists, notifications and RSS. As mentioned earlier, Chrome’s new Follow feature will use the open RSS standard. The feature will depend on the website’s RSS being up-to-date, and Google will do their part to guide web publishers on this.
The Follow feature will be available as a button in the Chrome app’s options menu. Once a user follows a website, new content from the website will show up in a “Following” section in Chrome’s New Tab page.
Google is testing the feature on the Chrome Canary build, which is the place where Google tests highly experimental features. Google will be taking feedback from publishers, bloggers, and creators about the Follow feature before they decide to roll it out widely.
