Spotify on Apple Watch adds downloads, offline playback for premium subscribers

Apple Watch users who are also Spotify premium subscribers can now rejoice as the streaming service has now added the ability to locally download playlists, albums, and podcasts in the standalone Spotify app on the Apple Watch.

Spotify first introduce a standalone app that was capable of streaming on the Apple Watch back in November 2020. Since then, the company has steadily added features, and with the latest update, users can finally locally download their favourite content in the Spotify Apple Watch app.

To download onto the Spotify app,

  1. Find the music and podcasts on the Spotify app on the Apple Watch.
  2. Select the playlist, album, or podcast and press the three dots (…) and choose “Download to Apple Watch.”
  3. The Downloads section can show the progress of the downloads.
  4. Once playlists, albums, or podcasts in the library are downloaded, there will be a little green arrow next to their names.

The feature will allow Apple Watch users to take their music with wherever even without their phone, which is quite useful for non-cellular versions of the Apple Watch too.

Along with this, Spotify also added the ability to use Siri to play songs on Spotify. For examples, users can say “Hey, Siri, play my Discover Weekly playlist on Spotify”, and Siri will do so on Spotify through the Apple Watch.

These updates will be rolling out to all Apple Watch users over the coming weeks.
