Lately, Apple has been making a huge push for Spatial audio support across their devices and services, such as Apple Music. The feature is now appearing in third-party apps as Netflix has begun rolling out an update that enables Spatial audio in their iOS and iPadOS apps.
Support for Spatial audio first appeared in iOS 14 and iPadOS 14, enabling a directional audio experience by simulating virtual audio sources in a 3-dimensional space around the user’s head. The feature also makes use of gyro and accelerometer sensors and continue playing sound from its virtual location even if the user turns their head and looks around.
With iOS 15, Apple introduced their Spatialize Stereo option, which can convert any non-Dolby Atmos content to simulate spatial audio.
By enabling the feature in Netflix, users who own either the AirPods Pro and AirPods Max, can now enjoy content on the platform with 3-dimensional directional audio. The feature has begun rolling out slowly to all iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 devices, and should be enabled for everyone over the coming weeks.
