India smartphone market ships 52 million units, down 2% YoY in Q3 2021: Counterpoint


For the first time since many quarters, the Indian smartphone market recorded a decline of 2% YoY during the third quarter of 2021. The market shipped a total of 52 million units and the top 5 manufacturers were Xiaomi, Samsung, vivo, realme and OPPO.

Xiaomi maintained their lead in Indian smartphone market, capturing a market share of 22% for shipments in Q3 2021. The company witnessed a large amount of success with the Redmi 9 series and Redmi Note 10 series in particular. Samsung came in second place with a 19% market share during the quarter. The company captured the top spot in the Rs. 10,000 – Rs. 30,000, and they were the second most popular company in the 5G segment.

In third place, vivo had a market share of 15% during the quarter. The company was also the leader in the 5G capable smartphone segment. realme and OPPO followed with 14% market share and 10% share respectively.

Among other brands, Apple was the fastest growing brand with 212% YoY growth in the quarter. The company reported that they have doubled their business in India, with strong demand from the iPhone 11 and iPhone 12. OnePlus also registered their highest ever shipments in India during Q3 2021, which were driven their Nord series smartphones.

In terms of the overall handset market in India, which includes features phones, there was 5% YoY decline in Q3 2021. The top 5 companies were Samsung, Xiaomi, vivo, Itel and realme.

Commenting on the state of the market and market dynamics in Q3 2021, Senior Research Analyst Prachir Singh said:

Smartphone shipments maintained a strong momentum after the second COVID-19 wave. The consumer demand outweighed the supply due to the high pent-up demand. Keeping in mind the global component shortage, most of the brands were aggressively working to secure enough stock for the festive season. The demand in the online channels remained strong and reached highest-ever shipments in Q3 2021.
