Today, realme launched the realme 9i smartphone in India as the successor to last year’s realme 8i. This features a 6.6-inch FHD+ 90Hz LCD variable refresh rate screen, is powered by the latest Snapdragon 680 6nm SoC compared to Helio G96 in the predecessor and also comes with 33W dart charge fast charging. We got hold of the phone, and here is our unboxing.

The realme 9i has a 6.6-inch Full HD+ LCD punch-hole screen with a pixel resolution of 2412 × 1080 pixels 2.5D curved glass screen with gentle rounded corners. The display is bright, and the sunlight legibility is good as well, thanks to 480 nits peak brightness. It has 90Hz refresh rate and 180Hz touch sampling rate, but the highlight is the adaptive refresh rate feature that can automatically switch between 5 different refresh rates -30Hz, 48Hz, 50Hz, 60Hz and 90Hz to save the battery life.
It has the punch-hole that houses a 16-megapixel camera, which has been in a standard in most realme mid-range phones. The earpiece is present on the top edge and doubles up as a secondary speaker. Powered by Snapdragon 680 6nm SoC with up to 6GB of RAM, the performance is good, but the Helio G96 in the realme 8i was more powerful. It also has Dynamic RAM Expansion (DRE) technology, which can add up to 5GB to the existing 6GB RAM. The 4GB RAM version has 3GB expansion.
Coming to the button placements, the power button which includes the fingerprint scanner is present on the right side. The dedicated dual SIM and microSD slots are on the left, along with the volume rockers. 3.5 mm audio jack, primary microphone, USB Type-C port and the loudspeaker grill are present on the bottom. The secondary microphone is on the top. Audio from the stereo speakers are good.
Coming to the camera, this is the first realme phone to feature the 50-megapixel main camera with f/1.8 aperture and Samsung JN1 Sensor. It has a 2-megapixel 4cm macro camera and a 2-megapixel B&W portrait camera with f/2.4 aperture, same as the predecessor. It supports up to 1080p 30 fps video recording. Coming to the design, the phone has prismatic texture in the light shows an overflow of color-like rhythm and offer a visual feel of “light in the movement.” The Stereo Prism Design offers a dynamic effect of three-dimensional light and shadow transformation. It is 8.4mm thin, and weighs 190 grams since it packs a 5000mAh battery that can charge up to 100% in 70 minutes.
Priced starting at Rs. 13,999 for the 4GB RAM with 64GB storage version, the phone will be available from Flipkart, realme.com and offline stores from January 25th with early access sale starting from January 22nd.
