Samsung confirms 4 generations of Android updates, 5 years of security updates for range of new and upcoming smartphones, tablets


After reports, Samsung at its Galaxy Unpacked event confirmed that it will offer 4 generations of Android OS updates, up from 3 generations of upgrades that was announced in 2020. This includes select Galaxy S series, Z series smartphones, A Series, and tablets.

Samsung said that it is working to scale this effort across its various product ranges within the Galaxy ecosystem and works closely with partners to deliver Android OS upgrades in record time through Samsung One UI. Samsung said it will also provide four years of upgrades to One UI Watch and Wear OS Powered by Samsung.

Last year, Samsung promised 4 years of security updates since its initial launch date, now the latest flagships will get 5 years of security updates. Samsung already offers 5 years of security updates for its enterprise edition Galaxy devices.

Eligible Galaxy devices include with four years of One UI and five years of security updates:

  • Galaxy S Series: Galaxy S22, S22+, S22 Ultra as well as Galaxy S21, S21+, S21 Ultra, S21 FE and upcoming S series devices
  • Galaxy Z Series: Galaxy Z Fold3, Galaxy Z Flip3 and upcoming Z series devices
  • Galaxy Tablets: Galaxy TabS8S8+, S8 Ultra and upcoming Tab S series devices
  • Galaxy Watch: Galaxy Watch4, Galaxy Watch4 Classic and upcoming Galaxy Watch series devices

Samsung confirmed that Galaxy devices that not eligible to receive four generations of One UI upgrades are still supported with up to three generations of One UI upgrades, an improvement over the two generations previously offered.
