When Apple releases a new iPhone series, they typically will feature the same A-series processors inside across all models. That may change in 2022 with the iPhone 14 series, as Apple is expected to offer the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max with the older A15 Bionic SoC, while the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Max will feature a newer A16 Bionic SoC.
According to Apple analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone 14 series will have 4 models – a regular iPhone 14, an iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. The iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Pro will come with a 6.1-inch display, while the iPhone 14 Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max will come with a 6.7-inch display. It appears that Apple is ending the ‘iPhone mini’ series after all.
All 4 models are expected to feature 6GB of memory, however the regular iPhone models will have slower LPDDR4X while the higher-end Pro models will have faster LPDDR5 memory.
What is even more interesting is that Apple may continue to use the same A15 Bionic chip in the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max. Only the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max appears to be getting the A16 Bionic. This is a departure from conventional Apple behaviour, as iPhone models in the same series typically have the same A-series chip. For example, the iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 and the 2 iPhone 13 Pro models all offered the A15 Bionic SoC. However, that may change this year, and the reasons are unknown for now.
