Plex is ending support for Podcasts and Web Shows

Plex offers a media server solution for organizing your personal media. Curate and stream your personal library of movies, TV shows, and music across all of your devices. Free music streaming as well as podcast live streams allow you to listen to all of your favorite podcasts and music. Regrettably, Plex is now discontinuing support for podcasts and web shows.

Plex officially introduced integration for podcasts and web shows in 2018, and unlike most of the service’s other features, it didn’t require a dedicated server — audio files were downloaded from the publisher to your device like every podcast player. Nevertheless, the functionality continued mostly unchanged after that, and numerous flaws are believed to have stayed unchecked. According to Plex, you’ll be able to export your podcast subscriptions in common OPML format, which can then be imported into almost all other podcast apps.

In the announcement post, Plex mentioned that;

As part of our ongoing effort to make sure we’re spending our time and energy in ways that best serve our awesome user community, we’ve made the decision to end support for Podcasts and Web Shows within Plex. We recognize this decision will impact several of you greatly, and we apologize for the inconvenience it will cause. You can continue to access these features within Plex until Friday, April 15th, 2022, at which point they will no longer be available.

We’re big podcast fans here at Plex, while they’ll no longer be supported in our apps, we hope you’ll continue to enjoy them in your podcatcher of choice. To make your transition a little easier, you can download your list of podcast subscriptions in OPML format. Again, we’re sorry for the inconvenience, thanks for using Web Shows and Podcasts, and we hope to see you around Discover and Live TV soon!
