In addition to all the major hardware and software announcements made during the I/O 2022 keynote presentation, such as the Pixel 6a and details regarding what’s to come with Android 13 later this year, Google has also announced long-awaited improvements to Android Auto, including a redesigned interface as well as brand-new features.
New look for Android Auto
This summer, Android Auto will get a completely new interface that makes it easier to get directions, controls media, and access more features.
Split screen mode
With split screen mode, you will further access your most-used functions without returning to your main screen or scrolling through a list of apps. The new design looks fresh on widescreen, portrait, and other screen sizes, and the new interface is also able to adapt to different screen sizes.
Android Auto and Google Assistan
Google Assistant now offers contextual suggestions to help you work while driving. It can suggest replies or messages, share arrival times with a friend, or perhaps even play recommended music. You can now text or call preferred contacts with just one swipe, and react to messages by picking a recommended response on the display—all while keeping your eyes on the road.
Cars with Google built-in
Google previously announced YouTube for Google Cars, and now Tubi and Epix Now will join the list. So while you’re waiting for your car to charge or at the curb, you may watch videos on your car’s display. With future Google-equipped automobiles, you’ll be able to not only access the web contents, but also cast content from your smartphone to your car’s screen. They say it doesn’t function with Netflix or other DRM-protected content. For added protection, video streaming apps only work when the vehicle is motionless.
Availability
Google says the new Android Auto interface will be ready by summer. That means it should come between now and the end of June, albeit no specific date has been given.
