Apple asks users to add UPI or Net Banking as it no longer accepts credit, debit cards for App Store payments, subscriptions in India

Earlier this month, Apple stopped accepting debit or credit card payments for subscriptions and app purchases. Today, the company has confirmed the same and said that that it will only support UPI and Net Banking for adding funds to Apple ID, which can be used for such payments.

This comes before Reserve Bank of India regulations, starting June 1 which mandates that no entity or merchant, other than card issuers and card networks, should store card details — or card-on-file (CoF).  Apple said that it will no longer store card information on file, and added that protecting users’ payment method is its top priority.

To avoid interruptions to subscriptions and other purchases, you need to:

  1. Add UPI or Net Banking as a payment method.
  2. Add funds to your Apple ID balance.

It has a separate payment methods page to help you add these payment methods. Apple said that subscriptions will continue as long as there is sufficient balance. However, if it cannot renew your subscription due to insufficient balance, your subscription will automatically expire.

Apple accepts debit and credit cards for purchases and subscriptions in hundreds of countries it operates.
