Apple announced the new 13.6-inch MacBook Air with the M2 chip inside at their WWDC 2022 Keynote event. According to new rumours, Apple is reportedly planning to expand their MacBook Air lineup with a 15-inch model and maybe a 12-inch model in the future.
The M1-powered MacBook Air proved to be extremely popular when it launched back in 2020. According to Apple, it was their best-selling MacBook Air to date. With the launch of the latest M2-powered MacBook Air, which features a major redesign and powerful performance, Apple is looking to continue this success. In particular, they are aiming to grab market share from Lenovo and HP, who lead the laptop segment worldwide.
According to the rumours, Apple wants to expand upon the line up with two new models in the next two years. Apple has never released a 15-inch MacBook Air before, so this would be the first time the company has done so if it does come to market. This model will likely launch sometime in 2023.
Along with the 15-inch model, Apple is also reportedly working on a 12-inch MacBook Air, which would become the smallest laptop offered by Apple since the older 12-inch MacBook. The 12-inch MacBook had mixed reactions when it launched, criticised for its unreliable keyboard and its single USB-C port. The new 12-inch MacBook Air may launch late 2023 or may be pushed to 2024.
Beyond the MacBook Air, Apple is expected to introduce new models of the MacBook Pro 14-inch and 16-inch, powered by the rumoured M2 Pro and M2 Max chips.
