Opera has revealed plans to integrate AI-generated content services into its PC and mobile browsers. The browser will soon feature “Shorten,” a tool powered by ChatGPT that summarizes articles and webpages. This follows Microsoft’s recent introduction of a Bing search engine and Edge browser that also utilize ChatGPT.
Opera browser experience with AI
Opera aims to integrate AI-generated content services into its browser and enhance the browsing experience with new AI-powered features. The first feature being tested is “Shorten,” a button in the address bar that generates short summaries of articles or webpages using AI technology.
This comes in response to the overwhelming amount of content on the web that is difficult to process. By offering access to AI services such as ChatGPT and developing a solution that filters and summarizes content for users, Opera is providing a more streamlined and relevant browsing experience.
Opera is working to expand its AI program into AI-generated content for its browser, news, and gaming products. This will be achieved through its own solutions and partnerships with existing and new companies. The demand for AI services has skyrocketed, with ChatGPT reaching 100 million users in record time.
Opera’s integration of AI technology aligns with its history of providing users with direct access to popular internet platforms such as TikTok, Telegram, and WhatsApp.
Speaking on the announcement, Song Lin, Co-CEO of Opera, said,
In more than 25 years of our company’s history, we have always been at the forefront of browser innovation. Whether inventing browser tabs or providing our users with built-in access to generative AI tools, we always push the limits of what’s possible on the web. Following the mass interest in generative AI tools, we believe it’s now time for browsers to step up and become the gateway to an AI-powered web.
Speaking on the AI solutions, Krystian Kolondra, EVP PC Browsers and Gaming at Opera, said,
It is Opera’s belief that with AI solutions springing up both for text, image, and audio generation and in countless other forms, we are at the brink of a new era of creativity on the Web. That’s why we’re reshaping the browser to allow our users to tap into all these resources and to unfold their full potential in the best possible way.
Commenting on the AI experience, Per Wetterdal, Head of Strategic Partnerships and AI ecosystem, said,
We see the rise of Generative Intelligence as the beginning of a new future in which consumer app developers like Opera will be able to build experiences on top of AI-based platforms. We are excited to see the rapid roll-out of developer programs for solutions such as Google Bard, for example, and are starting to build and roll out new experiences in web browsing that not very long ago seemed impossible to achieve.
