Intel has unveiled their 4th Gen Xeon Scalable processors with Intel vRAN Boost, which provides 2x capacity gains over its predecessor while using the same power envelope and up to 20% power savings with integrated acceleration. Intel recently announced two workstation processors, the Xeon W-3400 and W-2400.
SK Telecom and Intel collaborated to create the Intel® Infrastructure Power Manager for 5G core reference software 30% average run-time CPU power savings. In addition, Intel demonstrated the industry’s-first 1 terabit per second 5G User Plane Function (UPF) workload performance on their 4th Gen Xeon Scalable processors.

vRAN Boost
The need for high-performance, scalable, flexible and energy-efficient systems is transforming mobile networks from hardware-based silicon and infrastructure to fully virtualized platforms running on general-purpose processors. vRAN is enabling CoSPs to meet future requirements while improving energy efficiency and reducing TCO.
5G Core Networks: Cloud-Native Agility
Intel is leading the transition to cloud-native, service-based architectures with open solutions to solve problems such as performance, TCO, power efficiency, security and lack of visibility across the network stack. Intel’s hardware and software solutions will help 5G core networks optimize power efficiency, performance, and latency for both business and customer requirements.
Intel Leading the Way at the Edge
The growth of video services at the network edge will shape the competitive landscape for service providers this decade. It’s difficult to know which services will be successful, but Intel is working with partners Broadpeak, China Mobile, Cloudsky, Thundersoft, and ZTE to develop the Intel Converged Edge Media Platform. This shared, multitenant architecture can scale based on cloud-native needs, and it can adjust to changing requirements.
Delivering Customer Choice in Acceleration
Intel is expanding its range of acceleration solutions with the Agilex 7 FPGAs and eASIC N5X structure ASIC devices for cloud, communications and embedded applications. As cloud service providers (CSPs) and transition to 400G networks in 2023 and 2024 respectively, Intel’s Agilex 7 FPGA AGI 041 devices will enable the next generation of 400G infrastructure acceleration solutions. AGI 041 devices offer the perfect balance of power, capacity and performance for 400G Infrastructure Processing Unit (IPU) and networking solutions.
Availability
Intel is offering multiple SKUs of its 4th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processor with Intel vRAN Boost:
- Power-optimized SKUs up to 20 cores – available in the second quarter of 2023 – are ideal for deployments with challenging space, thermal and power requirements, like rural and small cell deployments.
- Performance-per-watt optimized SKUs up to 32 cores – available in the third quarter of 2023 – are suited for scaling up vRAN services for densely populated areas and massive MIMO deployments.
