Telecom subscriber base increase marginally as Jio, Airtel gain subscribers in January 2023: TRAI

According to the data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, the number of wireless telephone subscribers in India increased from 1,143.93 million at the end of December 2022 to 1,143.02 million at the end of January 2023, thereby showing a monthly growth rate of 0.01%.

As of January 31, 2023, the market share of wireless subscribers held by the private telecom operators was 90.55%, while that of the two PSUs (public service providers), BSNL and MTNL, was only 9.45%.

According to the data, the number of subscribers climbed in urban areas by 0.05% to 652.72 million, and in rural areas by 0.01% to 518.03 million.

As of January 2023, Bharti Airtel has a 32.27% market share, while Reliance Jio has 37.28% share. Vodafone Idea, on the other hand, ended up in third slot with 20.99% share and BSNL had 9.21% market share.

In all service areas except Bihar, U.P.(W), Gujarat, J & K, Karnataka, Haryana, Punjab, U.P.(E) and Himachal Pradesh service, the number of wireless subscribers went up in January 2023.

Besides that, 12.40 million subscribers requested Mobile Number Portability (MNP) during the month. With this, the total number of MNP requests received since its inception has risen to 796.84 million by the close of January 2023.

According to data collected from 989 operators in January 2023 compared to 907 operators in December 2022, the total number of broadband subscribers increased from 832.20 million at the end of December 22 to 839.18 million at the end of January 23. This represents a 0.84% monthly growth rate, with Reliance Jio (434.02 million) leading the way.
