UIDAI and IIT Bombay to develop Touchless Biometric Authentication System

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has partnered with the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-Bombay) by signing a memorandum of understanding. The goal of the collaboration is to create a touchless biometric capture system that provides effortless accessibility and can be used in any location.

UIDAI and IIT Bombay Partner to Develop Touchless Biometric Capture System

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-Bombay) have signed a memorandum of understanding, to develop a touchless biometric capture system. This system is aimed to allow fingerprint authentication from home, much like face authentication, and will be a valuable addition to the existing facilities available in the Aadhaar ecosystem.

Joint Research for Biometric Capture System

As part of the collaboration, UIDAI and IIT Bombay will conduct joint research to develop a mobile capture system for fingerprints integrated with a liveness model. The upcoming system is anticipated to capture multiple fingerprints simultaneously, leading to an increase in authentication success rates. The combination of signal/image processing and machine learning/deep learning techniques will be used to utilize the common mobile phone accessible to most citizens.

NCETIS Leading R&D Efforts Making Universal Authenticator a Reality

The National Centre of Excellence in Technology for Internal Security (NCETIS), a joint initiative by IIT Bombay and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), will lead the research and development efforts for this system. The NCETIS will develop technology solutions for electronic system design and manufacturing to meet the specific needs of India’s internal security forces.

The upcoming touchless biometric capture system is a significant step towards making the Universal Authenticator a reality, once it becomes operational. UIDAI and IIT Bombay are working together to develop a new system that will be a valuable addition to the Aadhaar ecosystem. The collaboration aims to create a system that provides a great user experience.

UIDAI strengthens Aadhaar security with AI/ML-based mechanism

To enhance the security and accessibility of Aadhaar, UIDAI has been introducing new features and technology, including a new security mechanism based on artificial intelligence (AI). Launched this February, this AI-based mechanism enables faster detection of spoofing attempts during Aadhaar-based fingerprint authentication.
