Google is reportedly planning to introduce a Dashcam feature to Pixel phones. Recently, a version of the Personal Safety app labeled as 2023.04.27.532191641.8-dogfood was accidentally released through the Play Store.
The app provides a range of practical features including Emergency Sharing, Safety Check, and Car Crash Detection. According to reports, a new feature called “Dashcam” will be added, allowing users to record video and audio while driving. The recorded footage can provide valuable information in case of accidents or unexpected situations.
Once the feature is available, users can access it through a dedicated “Dashcam” shortcut on the home page. They can manually start recording or review recent videos. During recording, the phone remains fully functional, including navigation with Google Maps. Alternatively, users can save power by locking the screen while the recording continues.
Google has designed this feature to be user-friendly and automatic. During setup, users can choose to start recordings automatically when they connect to specific Bluetooth devices, such as their car stereo. Recordings will end when the connection is lost.
To save storage space, recordings are automatically deleted after three days unless saved. The app compresses videos, averaging around 30 MB per minute, with a maximum recording length of 24 hours.
It is unclear if Dashcam will be exclusive to Pixel phones or available on other devices with Google’s Personal Safety app. If it is exclusive, the upcoming June Pixel Feature Drop may present an opportunity for its launch.
