iOS 17 to bring Smart Display feature for iPhones: Report

As per a report from Bloomberg, Apple is said to be working on a fresh interface for iPhones that will present various information like calendar appointments, weather updates, and notifications in a manner resembling a smart-home display.

These changes are expected to be introduced as part of the upcoming iOS 17 software update, which will bring a range of new features to Apple devices.

New iPhone Interface to Display Live Information

Apple is reportedly developing a new interface for iPhones that will display live information when the device is locked and placed horizontally, similar to Google and Amazon smart-home displays. This feature aims to enhance the usability of iPhones when they are placed on a desk or nightstand.

Part of a Broader Software Approach

The new iPhone interface is part of Apple’s broader strategy to incorporate live information into various aspects of its software. This approach is also evident in the Apple Watch’s interface. The updated interface is planned to be included in the iOS 17 software update, codenamed Dawn, scheduled for release later in 2023.

Inspired by Existing Features

The new iPhone interface will resemble a similar feature introduced in the Android operating system in 2019 and Amazon’s Echo Show devices. It will feature a dark background with bright text for improved readability. This development builds upon the lock screen widgets introduced in iOS 16, allowing users to view snippets of information below the time vertically.

Other Device Enhancements

Apple is also exploring the introduction of a new horizontal interface for the iPad, but progress has been slower for that device. Additionally, Apple is working on turning its devices into smart-home displays, including the development of a low-cost tablet that can magnetically attach to walls and stands. iOS 17 will bring notable changes to the Wallet app, location services, a new journaling app, and health-related features.

Upgrades for Collaborative Features

Apple is planning upgrades for SharePlay, a feature that enables users to collaborate while FaceTiming, and AirPlay, which allows content to be streamed to TVs and speakers. The company has engaged in discussions with hotels and other establishments to facilitate seamless streaming to devices not owned by users.

Apple’s WWDC 2023 Conference

Apple has announced that its WWDC 2023 conference will take place from June 5th to June 9th. Further details regarding these developments are expected to be revealed during the conference.
