Google has announced that repair parts for the Pixel Fold will be made available through iFixit. This partnership was initially established in April 2022, with Google and iFixit collaborating to provide repair kits for the Pixel phone series. According to a Google spokesperson, this arrangement will also extend to the Pixel Fold devices.
Notably, the Pixel Fold will be the first foldable device to offer do-it-yourself (DIY) repair options. Alongside DIY options, Google will provide in-store and mail-in repair services for the Pixel Fold.
The iFixit partnership for the Pixel Fold will include genuine spare parts for various components like batteries, screens, charging assemblies, and necessary adhesives. Additionally, step-by-step guides will be provided, facilitating easier DIY repairs for the battery, screen, and charging port.
Furthermore, it has been confirmed by Google that the inner folding display of the Pixel Fold will also be covered by these repair options. Recent reports highlighted issues with the folding display, with one reviewer’s Pixel Fold reportedly becoming unusable after only four days.
While Google’s provision of repair parts is an impressive step, the practicality of repairing a foldable display remains a point of interest.
On the announcement, reported by 9to5Google, Google confirmed,
We provide mail-in and walk-in repair services for Pixel Fold devices outside the warranty period. Additionally, we are planning to make parts, repair guides, and tools available through iFixit.
Specifically for the Pixel Fold, we offer an Extended Warranty (Preferred Care) that covers accidental damages and mechanical breakdowns after the standard warranty expires.
Customers have the option to choose either a monthly plan or a one-time payment. Through this service, customers can have their Pixel Fold repaired, or if necessary, replaced, with a deductible.
