JioBharat 4G feature phones with in-built UPI launched for Rs. 999

Jio, the telecom giant, has unveiled the Jio Bharat Phone platform, aimed at realizing India’s ‘2G-MUKT BHARAT’ vision. This innovative platform enables over 250 million feature phone users to access the internet through their devices.

Internet-Enabled Services for Entry-Level Phones through Jio Bharat Platform

The JioBharat platform utilizes the capabilities of both devices and networks to offer internet-enabled services on entry-level phones. This groundbreaking initiative opens up new possibilities for feature phone users to experience the benefits of digital connectivity.

In addition to Reliance Retail, renowned phone brands, starting with Karbonn, are joining hands with Jio to adopt the ‘Jio Bharat platform’ and manufacture ‘Jio Bharat phones.’ This collaboration aims to expand the availability of affordable internet-enabled phones across the country.

Bridging the Digital Divide: Jio Bharat’s Mission

Jio Bharat’s primary objective is to empower every Indian with digital services, particularly those who cannot afford smartphones. By providing internet access on feature phones, Jio Bharat seeks to bridge the digital divide and uplift the lives and economic well-being of millions of people.

Feature phone users have faced increasing digital disempowerment due to the rising costs imposed by other telecom operators. The minimum price for basic voice services, which previously cost Rs. 99 for a 30-day period, has now doubled to Rs. 199. This exploitation predominantly affects users who are unable to afford smartphones.

Overcoming Affordability and Access Restrictions

In addition to affordability challenges, feature phone users also face restrictions in accessing digital services. Jio Bharat aims to alleviate these issues and provide an opportunity for this underserved segment of the population to experience the transformative power of technology.

The Jio Bharat Phone comes equipped with a range of features, including UPI with Jio Pay, FM Radio, and a camera. It also supports Jio Apps such as Jio Cinema and Jio Saavn.

Beta Trial of Jio Bharat Phones

Jio will begin beta trials of JioBharat phones for 1 million users from July 7, 2023. This aims to ensure scalability and streamline the process of upgrading feature phone users.

The beta trial will cover 6,500 tehsils, enabling Jio to gather insights and cater to feature phone users across different regions effectively.

Pricing and availability

Jio Bharat phones are priced at Rs. 999, offering the lowest entry price for an internet-enabled phone, making it highly accessible to users.

  • Jio Bharat users enjoy a 30% cheaper monthly plan and seven times more data compared to other operator offerings for feature phones.
  • For Rs. 123 per month, users get unlimited voice calls and 14 GB of data, surpassing competitor plans.

Commenting on the launch, Akash Ambani, Chairman, Reliance Jio, said,

At Jio, we are committed to democratizing the internet and passing the benefits of technology to every Indian. With 250 million mobile phone users in India still trapped in the 2G era, we are taking bold steps to eradicate the digital divide and welcome every citizen to join this movement.

The new Jio Bharat phone is a testament to our focus on bringing true value and real-life use cases to different segments of users. We care for every citizen of our nation and will go the extra mile to ensure everyone reaps the benefits of our rapidly evolving digital society.
